Painting Furniture

Some of you were interested in learning how to paint furniture. So I made you a little step-by-step guide on how I did my dresser.

Originally I was planning on refinishing the dresser. However, after doing the top, I decided I was in way over my head. The nice thing about painting is when you sand, you don't have to remove all of the finish. You just need the surface to be a little rough so the paint sticks well. Before you start, make sure your furniture is made out of some sort of wood (solid, compressed, ply, etc.). If it is plastic or metal you can still paint it but I recommend spray paint that says it is made for that material. Also, I would recommend a nice brush. I have never bought one but I have used one and it really does make a difference. For my next painting project, I want to buy a Purdy brush from Lowe's.It does take time but it is so worth it in the end. Is this helpful? Any questions or additional tips?

  2. Oh I just l-o-v-e this! I painted my husband's desk (it was a nasty hunter green color), and I will be posting before and after pics of it soon. By the way, I cannot believe how much better the drawers look with the white paint and new hardware. It's like a brand new piece of furniture, and an expensive piece at that.

  4. Sure. I used Lowe's Olympic interior paint with a satin finish. I have also heard Behr paint and primer in one is great. Good luck!

  5. I am new to painting furniture! Is it not furniture paint? Just the kind you would use on walls? Forgive my ignorance! ;)

  6. I have never heard of furniture paint. I just use regular paint that you could use for walls and trim. You want to make sure the finish isn't too matte because it will make wiping it off harder. When painting furniture that will be used a lot you may want to add a varnish finish like they do in this video.

  8. WoW this is awesome! I have a built-in buffet that covers a whole wall. It's stained a dark maple color. I'm going to use a primer and then paint it white. Did you use water or oil based paint?

  9. Just regular water-based paint. I definitely recommend a some kind of top-coat too.
